A lads trip to Vementry

A year a go some work friends and I spoke about going to Vementry for a nights camp and a year later we actually got there. Due to the weather forecast a camp was off, but that didn't stop us having a great time!

We took a double and single kayak from Vementry on the mainland across to the island...

Having conquered the mighty Cribba Sound we were ready to conquer the island...

It was a beautiful day and we had the place to ourselves.

My friends had never been to Vementry before and were clearly enjoying it.

First port of call was the guns on Swarbacks Head, about as far from our landing spot as you can get, but a worthwhile walk.

This was a WW2 outpost guarding the entrance to Swarbacks Minn, there are two more on Bressay.

After a pit stop at the Guns the next stop was the heel shaped cairn on top of Muckle Ward.

Before heading down and around Cows Head and a spot of fishing and a fire on the beach.

We set off back to the mainland about 9pm, just as the rain started coming in. What a fantastic day!

And here's a short video of our adventure...

Making the best of a grim day...

After a quick bike ride to Hamanvoe in the foggy drizzle, and with Beren at footy followed by a party, Clare and I had a date day. We went to see the new 'Wonder woman' film; we fancied the pictures and it was the only film on at the right time. Don't go, it's awful! The pizza afterwards at JoJo's made up for it and then we went for a potter about the Sand Wick area of Burra, one of my favourite spots for seal watching and soaking in the views.

The panorama above is really big so should expand for you to see all the seals in it. Here's a collection of some of them that were hanging about...

I photo'd while Clare glassed...

You looking at me?!

We watched the seals antics in the water and admired their ability to chill out on the most uncomfortable looking rocks and locations. A few terns were fishing...

...and there were a few pretty flowers about too...

The weather has now turned to proper rain again and it certainly doesn't seem like we're only a couple of weeks from the simmer dim!

I do hope it sorts itself out as I have a camp on Vementry planned for next weekend and an overnight bike tour out west the weekend after. Busy busy summer fun to come!
