Before we go...

We're off to Orkney for a weeks holiday in a few hours. We'd booked ourselves into a lovely looking cottage, The Head, on Grim Ness that even allows dogs. Just one problem Earl has grown far too big for the fairly big flight cage we had for him so the poor lad has to go to prison for the week. The ferry would just be a pain with the times of arrival and departure so despite our best plans we'll be dogless on our holidays; I just hope Earl is fine with the kennels.

I've had a busy week out and about with work investigating some new walks to promote along with the Shetland Amenity Trust rangers; oddly I've not taken many photos, but I did see a few beauties that I've caught on camera.

First up is this wonderful Frog Orchid that was part of a large patch of smaller ones on Fetlar. We came across quite a number of these on the north isles, but none as good as this one...

In the same area was this gorgeous red admiral...

It was flying about an feeding on the carpets of flowering thyme. Trying to catch it on camera on a breezy day with a long lens and no tripod was tricky, but in this one you can see it's tongue lapping up it's dinner...

The most interesting find though was this plant, Stag's-horn clubmoss. Only half a dozen or so sites of this exist in Shetland so it's pretty rare and also very beautiful in detail...

I think you could almost call it cute...

On the other hand it's flowers are almost alien, with one or two branches at the top...

We also saw a few porpoise over the week and plenty of the usual flowers, birds and seals including a dog fight between a tern and arctic skua right over our heads. Despite our best efforts along ottery coasts none of them showed up.

Just before we go I realise I'd forgotten to share this little video of Scalloway Gala  last weekend. Clare and Beren are on the last float which actually won the best float.  I pretty sure it was a fix for the cute kids form nursery though as some of the other floats were excellent and full of energy.

There's no internet where we are going so there'll be no posts until we're back. Bye for now...
