A day out around Culswick

It's been yet another stunning day in Shetland so we ventured out to The Broch of Culswick with friends and family for a wander and a picnic with the kids.

While we soaked up some sun, keeping out of the still cool wind, the kids explored the old broch both around it's walls...

and within it's walls...

Earl enjoyed his day out on the coast too...

Looking from the broch over towards Vaila with Foula on the left on the horizon..

After our picnic we spilt up with the kids going south round the coast towards The Stead of Culswick  and enjoying playing on the beach and me and my daughter and son-in-law heading north around the coast in the opposite direction towards a subterranean passage in a headland I wanted to checkout.

Heading north with the isle of Vaila to the left and Whites Ness to the right...

It wasn't long before we could see the small headland poking out into the voe which has a short tunnel right through it...

It's may be 30m from one side to the other...

We could have walked through if we didn't mind getting wet to the waist, but we did mind! May be one day when the tide is right out I'll wander through...

After a wander around the headland we struck off inland towards Vivilie Loch and a chambered cairn I'd noticed on the map. It was pretty easy to find on a little knoll over looking the lock. The roof had been removed but the entrance tunnel and chamber of the heel shaped cairn was very obvious...

Looking over the chambered cairn and Vivilie Loch...

Next it was up to the heady heights of The Ward of Culswick. Luckily we managed to get to 119m without oxygen and sat a while at the top to soak in the panoramic view...

Not long later we were back at our parking spot to meet up with the rest of our mob after having a great afternoon out west. Roll on tomorrow it's turning out to be a grand Easter break...
